What we achieve in life – the life we’re currently experiencing – is the result of who we are. This is doesn’t mean that those who are going through challenges are to blame for what is happening to them; it means that the only way for a person to change their experience of life is to change the inside of them.
The choices and decisions that a person makes are based on the beliefs and records held in the subconscious. These records provide not an understanding of the world and how it works, but who the individual is – not who they really are, but who they believe themselves to be.
Who Are You?
Who you are is a combination of the data you hold in your subconscious. From birth, a baby starts to learn who he is, what reality is, and how the world around him works. The way in which he learns this is through experiences. Every experience he has is interpreted by his subconscious; and then that interpretation is filed as data – for future reference of “truth”.
Every new experience is filtered through the existing data already held in the subconscious, and given meaning accordingly – and filed, and so on.
This is how we are designed for optimal chance of survival and thriving in whatever environment we happen to find ourselves. It’s an automatic programming system that enables us to adapt and fit in with the world around us, regardless of whether we are born into a rural community in Africa; a concrete jungle, surrounded by street gangs; or a wealthy suburban neighborhood.
It’s also the reason we will develop the appropriate skills for survival and fitting in – whether we are born in a situation of stress, struggle, conflict and pain, or to loving parents in a stable and nurturing home. Wherever we find ourselves, the system we are equipped with ensures we learn from scratch, how best to survive and adapt.
While the core of you may be the same, your personality traits, preferences, fears, insecurities, and emotional triggers are all the result of the programming from this remarkable system. The conscious part of you – the smallest part of you – follows the invisible cues of the subconscious, based on those references that provide the proof of your own personal reality.
If you had been born into different circumstances, surrounded by different people with different coping skills, your own coping skills would have been different to those you have now. And the result may have been a different set of personality traits, tolerances, insecurities, emotional triggers and fears.
How Ethical is it to Change Who You Are?
How ethical is it to learn different skills to those you have now? How ethical is it to develop healthier eating habits and exercise routines? How ethical is it to improve your earning potential? How ethical is it to become a better person in order to enjoy more fulfilling relationships?
Changing who you are based on what you want to achieve in life is a matter of preference, not ethics. If you were to change who you are in order to please someone else, that would probably be detrimental to your own happiness; however, changing who you are in order to achieve what you want in life is the equivalent to becoming a healthier eater, or developing an interest in fitness, or practicing meditation in order to feel more calm and be more compassionate.
The key is to change the things about yourself that are producing the results you don’t want in your life, and keep the parts that are resulting in the things you do want.
How to Change the Bits You Don’t Want
Take a look at the parts of your life you wish were different. What is it that bothers you in your life? Make a note of what it is, and how you wish it were different. It is important to recognize and acknowledge that your experience of these things – regardless of what they are – are affected by who you are.
Everything you experience, no matter what it may be, is the result of the records you are holding in your subconscious. In order to change what you’re experiencing in life, you need to change the records that provide the “proof” for that experience.
Take a moment to think about the first thing on your list that bothers you. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and notice how you feel when you think about that thing. Take notice of the memories, thoughts and feelings. Then, use the FasterEFT technique to address those memories, thoughts and feelings.
Keep repeating the process until you flip the memories and any bad feelings have been replaced by good ones. Go back and check how you feel about that thing now. If you find that it still bothers you, think back to when you’ve experienced the same feelings in your life before – or when you’ve witnessed or heard about someone else experiencing them. And address those memories. Keep going until they flip.
