The Long and the Short of Procrastination

When most people think of procrastination, they tend to think of the short term, squashed deadlines and all-nighters that, while stressful, can at least make for an amusing story.

 

However, even though this can have a severe impact on your life, the less noticeable, long-term procrastination can be even more detrimental.

 

This is the type of procrastination that you don’t notice – except over long periods, when you suddenly wake up and realize you’ve let all this time slip by without starting that business, taking up that hobby or finally reconnecting with that loved one.

 

While you may have procrastinated on that piece of homework or work assignment until the last minute, our long-term goals often don’t have a last minute.

Why do We Procrastinate?

For most people, procrastination is due to the natural tendency to avoid pain and be drawn to pleasure.

 

It’s perfectly understandable that a person would rather do something fun than something that seems like a chore.

 

However, the ability to see ahead and appreciate the end result allows the majority of people to push through the temporary discomfort in order to access a greater sense of pleasure or avoid greater pain, later.

 

The problem comes when you find yourself procrastinating in spite of this knowledge.

 

Even though you know that putting off doing something now will cause you greater pain later, you still can’t seem to make yourself do it.

 

In this case, the limbic system (that produces sensations and feelings) is overriding the prefrontal cortex of your brain (where you do your cognitive thinking).

 

In addition to procrastination, this state also results in the task you need to do seeming harder.

 

Since the prefrontal cortex allows you to problem-solve, see opportunities, and plan, when the activity in this part of your brain has shut down because the limbic system has taken over, the tasks you need to get done seem far more overwhelming – without that part of your brain online.

 

 

How Does Procrastination Work?

The reasons for procrastination becoming a problem vary from person to person – depending on their life experience – but the process is the same.

 

The subconscious is referring to records that dictate that this is the “normal” or safest response; and then it signals the brain to trigger the organs to release the chemicals that will cause the feelings of reluctance.

 

These feelings may differ, but the result is a reluctance or resistance to moving forward when there is an intention to move forward. As a result of this, the conscious mind gives these feelings meanings – which can range from: “I’ll just clean my desk first” to “Ooh, look – Facebook!”

 

Change the records the subconscious is referring to, and you change the signal to the organs – which changes the chemicals that are produced, which changes the feelings, which in turn changes the decisions and actions taken.

Negative Emotions and Procrastination

Why do we have procrastination?

 

We don’t have it, we create it.

 

In very specific areas of our lives.

 

A lot of the things we procrastinate are things that we would enjoy completing, but they are almost always connected to negative emotions.

 

You might have been told that you’re just lazy or unmotivated; however, the truth is: If you had different references in your subconscious, you would not be procrastinating.

 

Despite the negative impact on your life, and berating yourself over and over again, telling yourself you won’t do it again, it keeps happening.

 

And it will continue to happen unless you cut it off at the source.

 

It’s not something you can fight with will power because you are fighting against a system convinced your life is on the line.

 

Many negative emotions are connected to procrastination.

 

You may recognize them as a fear of failure, resistance, a fear of being judged harshly on your performance, a fear of not living up to standards set by others or even yourself.

 

These aren’t rational emotions – they are simply the results of what you are carrying that your subconscious is referring to.

 

And you may experience these feelings as laziness, overwhelm or being too busy.

 

Since these emotions are caused by the records held in your subconscious, you cannot deal with them using logic or reason. It’s time to give your brain some new blueprints.

How to Change the Cause of Procrastination

Fortunately, you don’t even need to know the exact cause behind the problem.
