How to Stop Worrying

We know that worrying is bad for our health; but it’s not always easy to stop. Worrying is a self-perpetuating emotional state – the more you worry, the more you find to worry about. Like all negative emotional states, it is also a stress state. While you are worrying, your body is in the emergency “fight, freeze or flight” state. This means that your heart rate has increased, stress hormones like cortisol are coursing through your bloodstream, and the activity in the part of your brain responsible for cognitive thinking has been reduced. While in this state it is difficult (if not impossible) to think clearly or logically. The argument to stop worrying is clear… but how do you stop worrying – you can’t help it. Or can you? Here’s a technique that will help you to free yourself from worrying – quickly and effectively.

Reasons to Worry

First, let’s look at the reasons for worrying, to make sure that you are ready to make the conscious decision to change the habit.

– I can’t help it.

The great news is, there is a way you can stop worrying – if you choose to use it.

– I have good reason to worry.

No matter what you’re worrying about, worrying is never going to change it or improve the situation. Worrying can only do damage; it offers no benefits at all. – What’s wrong with worrying?

Apart from the physical damage to your health that comes from long-term fight-or-flight, while you are worrying you are not able to function optimally. Since it affects your cognitive thinking, your abilities to think clearly, solve problems, see solutions, and use reason and logic are all diminished. Because of this, the more you worry, the more you worry. The longer you stay in that state of worry, the more your fear builds because it is more difficult to use your reason and logic. When you are in that state, the fight-or-flight emergency state overrides any conscious reasoning you may try. It also means you will be making different decisions, taking different actions and relating to others differently than you would if you were not in a worried state. With the prefrontal cortex of your brain effectively shut down, you will take more risks and be more likely to act irrationally. Worrying changes your physiological state, causing damage without any benefits at all.

How to Stop Worrying

The reason you’re worrying is because your subconscious has “proof” that you should worry. This proof is not real evidence; it consists of records from experiences and things you’ve been taught, that your subconscious interpreted to mean you have to worry in order to stay safe. Fortunately, there is a fast and effective way to change those records so that they provide proof that you do not need to worry – you are safe. The first step is to make the decision to make the changes. The second step is to use the FasterEFT technique, which is designed to work with your subconscious to change those records.

Start by focusing on the feeling of worry. Think of a situation that would normally cause you to worry. Think back to see if you can remember feeling that feeling before. Can you remember the first time you felt it? Go to your earliest memory of feeling worried. If you can’t remember a time before last week, that’s fine – go to that. You may find that as you work through that one, other memories come up – be sure to use the technique to work through those as well. The Result

Once you have flipped those memories, you will find that you naturally no longer worry. You won’t need to try to stop yourself from worrying, you simply won’t feel the need. You will still care, but without the stressed state. And as a result of that, you will begin to see changes in all areas of your life.
