What is stress? Stress is the body’s reaction to perception. So, what is perception? Perception is how you see something, determined by the meaning your subconscious has assigned to it. For example, three people see a child crying and trying to get the attention of his mother who is talking to a friend. One person sees the child’s behavior as spoilt and attention-seeking. Another sees the child as suffering and being ignored by his mother. The third person sees the child as needing attention in that moment and the mother simply hasn’t noticed yet.
Each of those three perspectives will be the result of the records held in the observer’s subconscious, based on their own life experiences; it has absolutely nothing to do with reality. The reality may be, the woman talking to her friend is in fact not the child’s mother but someone who looks similar and the child is so upset, he hasn’t realized his mother is on the other side of the playground with his brother. Perception determines the way we see the world around us, regardless of reality.
To some people, allowing a dog to lick a plate after a meal is disgusting; others see no harm in it since it’s going in the dishwasher; and others would argue it doesn’t need to go in the dishwasher because the dog’s saliva is clean. Three different perspectives, based on subconscious associations from past experience. To some people a cold wind is unpleasant; to others it’s refreshing and bracing. Changing perception changes your experience.
Why Should You Change Your Perception?
“Why should I change my perception when they’re the ones who are wrong?” Here’s a guideline: If you don’t like something and you are able to change it, that’s great. However, if you don’t like something and it is beyond your control to change it, you have two options:
- Continue experiencing the bad feelings.
- Change your perception so that you no longer feel those bad feelings.
It’s a choice. You have the power to change your experience by changing what you can change – and sometimes that will have to be your perception. If you can’t change the thing itself, change how you perceive it and the way you feel will automatically change.
