Bugs aren’t exactly something most people are fond of – they evoke fear even if they’re no where to be seen.
This is purely a physiological response, triggered by the “fight or flight” response.

What is a Phobia?
A phobia is an irrational fear – a fear that is out of proportion or unreasonable in relation to physical threat.
There are many different phobias from spiders and cockroaches to heights and confined spaces.
In Aditya’s case, he knew logically, that the cockroaches and lizards are too small to actually do any physical harm to his self.
But that knowledge didn’t stop him from reacting with fear every time he saw cockroaches and lizards.
These are some of the more common phobias, but there are people who have a very real fear of items as unthreatening as bananas or the color yellow!
What Causes Phobias
As mentioned above, phobias are the result of a connection in the brain that relates the feared object to the body’s fight, freeze or flight response.
The fact that there is no logical reason for the fear has no effect on the fear itself since the state of fear is biological rather than through logic or reasoning.
In this case, Aditya’s brain had been programmed to signal the organs of his body to trigger the emergency stress response whenever he saw a creepy crawly.
This means that his body goes into exactly the same state it would if Aditya was in danger of being attacked by a wild animal.
There are many different possibilities as to the exact circumstances that resulted in his phobia; and many people with phobias are unaware of the original cause.
“I once woke up with a lizard crushed under me and it freaked me out. Also I’ve always been afraid of them as far [back] into my childhood [as] I can remember just [because] of the way they look and because I’ve been scared that they’d touch me. It’s not an irrational fear that keeps me up, but if I see a roach/lizard in my room, I’d have to chase it out before I could get on with whatever I was doing! Often, I’d get my friends to do the chasing out, but sometimes I’d do it myself.”
Like Aditya says, he didn’t know WHY he reacted the way he did, it just happened automatically whenever he saw a roach.
With more common phobias, like the fear of roaches and lizards, the connection can be caused by stories, dreams, frightening experiences, practical jokes, threats and a wide range of other possibilities.
Fortunately, you do not need to know the original cause in order to cure the phobia.

Go back to your earliest memory of experiencing your phobia.
How old were you?
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and go back to that moment.
See what you saw, hear what you heard, feel what you felt.
Notice how you feel.
Notice where in your body you feel the fear and how strong it is. (Isn’t it interesting that your fear is real even though the thing you fear is only in your mind right now).
Using two fingers, gently tap the following meridian points while focusing on the feeling of your fingers on your skin and saying the phrases.
– Between your eyebrows – I release and let this go now
– Beside your eye – It’s okay to let it go now
– Under your eye – I don’t need it anymore, and it’s safe to let it go now
– Just below your collarbone – That’s right, just let it all go; and I’m safe as I’m letting it go now
Grab your wrist, take a deep breath, blow it out, and say “Peace”.
Go to a peaceful memory and enjoy the feeling of that for a moment.
Now, think about the thing you’re frightened of; and notice what’s different.
Notice if the fear has changed in any way.
Notice any sensations in your body.
Just notice what’s still there.
Go back and repeat Steps 2 through 4 until the fear has completely gone.
And that’s exactly what Aditya did,
“Fast forward to a few days, (today) I came back from a long day at work, and found a dead roach. I tapped the fear away and actually held it in my hand. Pure joy! I turned it around, thought it was kind of cute actually!!”
Look at the distinct difference in his response!

Do not stop until there is no trace of the fear at all.
Test yourself, just like Aditya did, by thinking about the thing you fear in more detail.
Imagine holding it in your hands if appropriate, or doing whatever it is you fear, being in the place you fear.
And at the first sign of fear, repeat Steps 2 through 4 each time you feel any fear at all.
This is how you will clean it up completely.
“In the other room (also today) I saw a half-dead lizard, which was just slightly moving. Tapped the fear out and touched it. Now to a lay-person these may seem like a lame celebration but for me it is proof I can change lifelong beliefs in a heartbeat!! One moment I am freaked out by these creatures and the next I am holding them in my hand.”
